This program will explore lawyers’ ethical responsibilities when using artificial intelligence and provide practical guidance on how to begin incorporating AI into legal practice. Attendees will gain an understanding of the strengths and limitations of commonly available, low-cost AI tools, as well as why these resources can be useful but should not be fully trusted. The session will also touch on higher-cost AI systems and when they may be appropriate.

Sheldon G. Gilman


Sheldon G. “Shelly” Gilman recently retired from active legal practice but remains engaged in law-related matters, including assisting lawyers, addressing professional conduct issues, and exploring the impact of artificial intelligence. He earned his undergraduate degree from Ohio University and his law degree from Case Western Reserve University, and served four years in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

Mr. Gilman has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America (Trusts and Estates and Employee Benefits Law), including as 2016 Best Lawyer of the Year, and has also been listed in Kentucky Super Lawyers and Who’s Who in American Law, America, and the World.

A longtime leader in lawyer professional responsibility, he served on the Kentucky Bar Association Ethics Committee and Ethics Hotline for over 30 years, authoring more than 800 Informal Opinions. He was a member of the Ethics 2000 Committee and received the KBA’s Bruce K. Davis Bar Service Award in 2023.
