New Research Project on Lawyer Mental Health |
The Kentucky Bar Association is participating in a new, national research project on lawyer mental health, substance use and related issues. This research will be conducted by more than 30 state bars disseminating an anonymous and confidential survey to a random sample of their lawyers. You may receive an invitation to participate anonymously in the survey. Given substantial shifts in the legal profession over the past decade, including significant changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, an updated national assessment of mental health and substance use among attorneys is critically needed. This study will provide a 10-year update to the landmark 2016 ABA-Hazelden Betty Ford study, offering essential insights into current trends, attitudes, and barriers to mental health and well-being in law.
In addition to updating and building upon the 2016 study, this survey will include methodological enhancements and reach a much wider cross section of our lawyer population. The research is expected to provide a statistically reliable picture of the current mental health and well-being climate in the legal profession, necessary information which is highly germane to the practice of law and vital to effective policy formation at the state and national level. The research will allow state bars and regulators to improve outcomes, mitigate impairment risk, and increase public trust and confidence in our legal system.
If you receive the survey, please fill it out honestly and return it. Your answers are 100% anonymous and participants are unidentifiable. The results will help Kentucky shape policy and programs to help more Kentucky lawyers achieve and maintain good mental health. |

KCOJ previews new eFiling system at KBA Convention |
Attorneys got a first look at the Kentucky Court of Justice’s new eFile & Serve platform during a session at the KBA Convention. The court is transitioning to the Tyler Technologies system to modernize how cases are filed electronically.
The session included a live demo, project update and implementation timeline, along with information about training and support. The platform will allow attorneys to file cases, select service methods and receive electronic notifications through a centralized inbox.
Two key features — Service of Process and Attorney In-Box and Opt-In Notifications — are expected to be tested this summer. Statewide training and implementation will follow.
For more information, visit the KCOJ File & Serve (eFiling) webpage and click the Fast Facts – File & Serve link in the left column. |

Keep the box checked on your dues statements to help the Kentucky Bar Foundation! |
|
|
|
'Twas the night before dues time, when all through our state,
Kentucky's lawyers pondered their chance to create.
A difference for neighbors who needed their aid,
Through fifty small dollars that each could have paid.
The statements were printed with one simple box,
That held so much power to remove legal blocks.
From seniors in danger of losing their homes,
To veterans struggling with paperwork alone.
If more lawyers checked it—just think what we'd do!
More clinics, more help, more justice come true.
Combined with your colleagues, help Kentucky heal.
For fifty small dollars, that’s quite a good deal!
So keep the box checked as you pay your dues,
And join in the work that we cannot lose.
For throughout Kentucky, they'll hear as we say,
"When lawyers unite, justice wins the day!" |
